Volleyball Splits MIT Invitational Finale

CAMBRIDGE, Ma. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team split their double-header with Albion College and Illinois College on Saturday afternoon. Trisha Razdan and Jordan Perry represented the Garnet on the All-Tournament Team. 

The Garnet opened the day with a hard-fought, three-set victory over Albion. Kaylee Zhang had four service aces with 11 kills, while Razdan led the way with 13 kills. Dani Pena was also excellent with 37 assists and no set errors, while Ellie Streeper was the star on defense with 22 digs.

Swarthmore dropped their finale against Illinois in a highly-competitive four sets. Three of the four sets were decided by two points with Swarthmore winning the second set. Jordan Perry led the way with 15 kills, while Razdan totaled 13 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Swarthmore edged out Albion in a tight opening set. Zindzhi Montgomery tied the set at 8-8 with a kill, which sparked three-straight Swarthmore points. Albion would then counter with a 10-3 run to flip momentum in its favor, 18-13. However, the Garnet would not back down as they responded with a 7-2 swing to tie the game at 20-20. Albion had Swarthmore on the edge with a 23-21 lead, but the Garnet remained composed with four-straight points to close the set, 25-23. Razdan had two kills to open the final run, while Angelina Heminway recorded a kill to take the lead.

- Albion struck first in the second set with four-straight points to take a 12-7 lead. However, Swarthmore immediately responded with five-straight points to tie the set before eventually taking the lead on a Zhang ace, 14-13. The Garnet never trailed the rest of the way as they expanded on their lead to take the set, 25-19.

- Albion came out fighting in a must-win third set with a 5-1 opening. Albion then maintained pressure as they built on its lead and forced the Garnet to take a timeout, 11-5. Swarthmore climbed back into the game with four-straight points to pull within one. The Garnet then took their first lead of the set on a Razdan kill, which sparked five-unanswered Swarthmore points, 21-17. Zhang had two service aces during the run, while Razdan had a pair of kills. Albion made things close as they pulled within one point, but Swarthmore wrapped up the match with a Heminway kill, 25-23.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet led early in the opening set as they jumped out to an 11-6 advantage. However, Illinois countered with a 7-1 run to flip momentum around and capture the lead, 13-12. Swarthmore was able to regain momentum in a back-and-forth finish, but could not hold off a late surge from Illinois as it closed out the match with three-straight points, 26-24.

- Both teams traded points to start the second set. Illinois eventually gained separation with a 4-1 run to pull ahead by three. The Garnet regained the lead with a 5-1 rally, which featured a Zhang kill and service ace, 14-13. Trailing by one point late, Alexia Enache tied the set with a kill, which sparked a 5-1 run to put Swarthmore ahead by three points, 22-19. Illinois narrowed its gap to one point on three separate occasions, but Perry was able to claim victory with a kill, 25-23.

- Illinois took control of the third set with seven-unanswered points midway through the stanza, 14-7. The Garnet attempted to close the gap with four-straight points as they cut their deficit to six, but were unable to turn the set around as they fell 25-15.

- After falling behind 9-2 in the fourth set, Swarthmore rallied for seven-straight points to even the score. Perry had consecutive kills to take a three-point lead late in the set, 19-16. Illinois made another late surge with a 5-1 run, but Swarthmore was able to regain the lead with three-straight points, 23-21. Illinois then ended the game strong with a 5-1 run to seal the victory, 26-24.
