Volleyball Drops Five Set Battle at No. 21 MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Ma. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team dropped a tight five-set showdown at No. 21 MIT, 3-2, to open this weekend's MIT Invitational on Friday night.

Trisha Razdan paced the offense with 16 kills and a .303 hitting percentage, while Kaylee Zhang also tallied double-digits with 12 kills. Dani Pena and Emily Sun split setting duties with 28 and 12 assists, respectively. On the defensive side, Zindzhi Montgomery was a force as she matched a career-best five blocks.

The Garnet took the first and third sets to take a 2-1 advantage on the Engineers, but were unable to close out the match in the fourth and fifth sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams traded points early in the opening set as neither team was able to gain any separation. After a 14-14 tie, the Engineers captured some momentum with consecutive points to take a two-point advantage. The Garnet then responded as they countered with a 7-1 run to take a late lead over their nationally-ranked opponent. Zhang helped spark the run with three kills during the stretch. Swarthmore went on to close the set out on a Razdan kill and an Ellie Streeper service ace to clinch, 25-22.

- MIT climbed back into the match with a commanding second set. The Engineers gained separation in the set with a 7-1 run to take a 13-7 lead. Swarthmore was unable to climb back into the set as MIT closed the stanza with another 7-1 run to even the match score. The Engineers took the second set 25-13.

- Swarthmore bounced back early in the third set with five-straight points to jump out to an early advantage, 8-3. The Garnet never let the Engineers back into the game as they broke off a 6-1 rally to expand their lead to double digits. Swarthmore ended up taking the set, 25-14, on an Alexia Enache kill.

- The Engineers got out ahead of Swarthmore with a 7-3 lead to open the fourth set. However, the Garnet stormed back with an 8-1 rally to take their first lead of the set, 15-14. The run was aided by a couple Zhang service aces and two Razdan kills. The Garnet led late in the set, 19-18, but could not survive a last second surge from the home Engineers. MIT rallied for seven-unanswered points to force a final set, 25-19.

- MIT set the tone early in the fifth set with five-straight points to open the tiebreaker. The Garnet attempted to climb back into the match with three-straight points, but surrendered four-straight points to lose ground on their opponent, 9-3. The Engineers ended up clinching the match with a 15-6 victory.
