Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Upsets No. 8 Johns Hopkins, Falls to Virginia Wesleyan

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team split its trimatch versus No. 8 Johns Hopkins College and Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday.

The Garnet played their best game of the season with a four-set victory over the nationally-ranked Blue Jays as they handed Hopkins its first Centennial Conference loss since October 27, 2018. Swarthmore snapped a six-game losing streak versus its conference rival as they won their first matchup since the 2017 NCAA Regionals. The victory was also the program's highest ranked national win in team history with their previous best coming against No. 10 Carnegie Mellon in 2017.

The volleyball program celebrated seniors Dani Pena, Jordan Perry and Kaylee Zhang before today's action in recognition of their tremendous contributions and commitment to the program.

SWARTHMORE 3, JOHNS HOPKINS 1
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead to force an early Johns Hopkins timeout. Swarthmore continued to build momentum as they moved through the opening stanza. Alexia Enache helped spark the Garnet with a diving dig to help steal a point from the Blue Jays in the midst of a Swarthmore run. Sakura Shimozono then prompted another Hopkins timeout with a service ace to give the Garnet a seven-point advantage, 20-13. Swarthmore eventually closed out the set with a Trisha Razdan kill to take the opening set from the nationally-ranked Blue Jays, 25-19.

- Swarthmore raced out to another commanding start in the second stanza as they energized the crowd with a 14-6 run to open the set. Pena aided the fast start with two service aces as the Garnet stunned the Blue Jays with six-unanswered points. Swarthmore eventually built its lead to 10 points after Ellie Streeper helped avoid a service ace with a diving reception. Zhang then finished the rally with a kill to take a 22-12 advantage. Swarthmore ended the set with three-straight kills to take a two-set lead, 25-13.

- Both teams were evenly matched in the opening to the third set. Johns Hopkins began to pull away midway through the set with four-straight points to prompt a Garnet timeout, 15-11. After the Blue Jays built their lead to five points, Swarthmore began to climb back into the game with three-straight points. The Garnet capped off the stretch with a perfectly-placed Streeper ace to force a Blue Jays timeout, 19-17. Despite a late Garnet surge, Johns Hopkins held on to their advantage to force extra sets, 25-21.

- Johns Hopkins took an early timeout after Swarthmore began to gain traction in the fourth set, 7-4. Angelina Heminway and Zhang finished off the run with consecutive kills, while Zhang exited the timeout with a monestrous kill off a Hopkins reception. Hopkins began to capture momentum until Swarthmore silenced the Blue Jays down with three-straight points. Pena and Heminway combined for a thunderous block as they prompted another Blue Jays timeout, 14-10. Soon after the timeout, the Garnet rallied for four-straight points to gain separation late in the game. Swarthmore went on to clinch the match on a Heminway kill, 25-20.
