Volleyball Falls To Christopher Newport, Washington and Lee

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Swarthmore College women's volleyball team suffered a pair of losses in a tri-match at Christopher Newport University on Saturday.
 
The Garnet fell to the host Captains in four sets in their opening match of the day. Trisha Razdan and Jordan Perry produced 11 and 10 kills respectively. Kaylee Zhang added a team-high 18 digs to go along with nine kills.
 
Swarthmore ended the afternoon by coming up on the short end of a tough five-setter versus Washington and Lee University. Four Garnet players recorded double-digit kills, including Perry (18), Zhang (15), Razdan (14), and Angelina Heminway (10). Dani Pena amassed a career-high 54 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams were even at four in the opening set when the Captains took over with a 10-2 run. The Garnet trailed 18-10 before rallying for seven points to close the gap to one. However, Christopher Newport answered back with seven in a row of its own to take the set, 25-17.
 
- The Captains continued the momentum in the second, jumping out to a 9-1 lead. Swarthmore trailed by five (11-6) before CNU tallied eight of the next 10 to make it 19-8. The Garnet came within just seven the rest of the way as the Captains earned another 25-17 decision.
 
- Swarthmore got out to an 8-3 lead in the third set before CNU got back in it with six consecutive points. The Garnet were behind by two (13-11) before taking the advantage for good with a 5-0 surge. Zhang sparked the run with two service aces. Swarthmore held off the Captains and claimed the frame, 25-21.
 
- It was a tight fourth set as the teams battled back and forth and traded rallies. Both sides staved off set points late in the stanza and were even at 26. Christopher Newport then came up with a kill and an ace to clinch the match with a 28-26 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the opening set, Swarthmore trailed 12-10 then took over with a dominating 12-2 stretch. Perry led the way with five kills and the Garnet went on to take the first, 25-19.
 
- It was a close battle in the second but the Generals went ahead for good with a 4-1 run to make it 20-17 on the way to a 25-21 victory.
 
- The Garnet rolled in the third set, getting out to a 6-1 advantage on the way to a 25-13 triumph. Zhang produced a team-high five kills during the stanza.
 
- It was another fight in the fourth and the teams were tied at 15 midway through. Washington and Lee then jumped in front with a 9-3 stretch and went on to force a decisive set with a 25-19 decision.
 
- The Generals grabbed the early lead in the fifth but Swarthmore remained in it and trailed 8-6 at the halfway mark. However, Washington and Lee then pulled away with seven unanswered points to take the match, 15-6.
