No. 17 Women's Soccer Drops Centennial Matchup Versus McDaniel

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The No. 17 Swarthmore College women's soccer team was unable to cash in on several quality chances and suffered a 1-0 upset loss to McDaniel College in a Centennial Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. It was the first conference setback for the Garnet this season.

Swarthmore dominated possession and finished with a 23-7 advantage in shots, 8-1 in shots on goal. However, the bend-but-not-break Green Terror defense was able to pitch the shutout. Veronica Gibbons was all over the field for the Garnet, closing with a game-high seven shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore had its most dangerous sequence from the 11th to 13th minutes. Gibbons got her head on a free kick but the goalkeeper was able to punch the ball up over the goal. After the ensuing corner, Gibbons again had a golden opportunity but the shot rang off the left post. Ava Gizzie ended the sequence with a pair of shots, one of which was saved and the other went over the top.

- McDaniel nearly took the lead at the other end in the 15th minute, banging a free kick off the crossbar then sending the rebound opportunity wide right.

- The Green Terror broke through in the 36th minute for the lone goal of the contest, converting a header in front off a free kick.

- The Garnet owned a 9-2 advantage in shots in the second half, but placed just three on target.
