No. 21 Women’s Soccer Secures First-Round Bye, Gibbons Scores Twice

CHESTERTOWN, Pa. - The No. 21 Swarthmore College women's soccer team earned its sixth shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory at Washington College on Wednesday. The Garnet continued to dominate their career series against the Shorewomen with their 17th straight victory over Washington College.

With one game remaining in the regular season, the Garnet secured an opening round bye in the Centennial Conference Tournament as they sit three points ahead of third place Franklin & Marshall College.

Swarthmore put Washington away with two goals from Veronica Gibbons. Gibbons opened the scoring in the 40th minute and then added another tally off a header in the 87th minute.

Sofie Aird was excellent in goal to earn her first-career shutout. The first-year made eight saves to blank the Shorewomen on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Aird made a nice leaping save early in the contest to keep Washington off the board. The Shorewomen fired a shot from 10-yards out, but had the attempt tipped over the crossbar. Moments later, Aird added a couple more stops as she withstood an early push from the Shorewomen.

- The Garnet began to shift momentum in their favor as the half went on. Gibbons put Swarthmore on the board with the game's first tally in the 40th minute. The senior set up her own opportunity by winning a header off a goal kick. Marea Lee then sent the ball to Lauren Lior, who played a quick touch to Gibbons with a centering pass. Gibbons then fired a shot off the keeper's hand to notch the first goal, 1-0.

- Aird made a couple saves in the opening stretch of the second half to preserve the team's one-goal advantage. The Garnet eventually added some breathing room with an insurance goal from Gibbons. The senior found the back of the net for her second goal of the game after connecting with a header off a Keren Maze corner kick, 2-0.

- The first-year keeper, who was excellent all evening, capped off her shutout performance with a couple nice saves in the final few minutes of play. Aird made her best save of the game in the final 20 seconds as she deflected a quick touch from a couple yards away.
