Field Hockey Falls Short Versus No. 3 Johns Hopkins

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 24 Swarthmore College field hockey team fell short in a heavy-weight matchup versus Centennial rival No. 3 Johns Hopkins University, 3-0, on Saturday night.

The Blue Jays overtook the Garnet with goals in the first, third and fourth quarters. Cassandra Conklin made a game-high five saves on the night, while Grace Fuselier paced the offense with a pair of shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore fought off several Johns Hopkins corners in the opening quarter. Despite holding the Blue Jays to three shots, the corners eventually caught up to the Garnet as Hopkins connected on their fifth corner attempt of the stanza. Swarthmore nearly escaped the quarter with an even score until the Blue Jays struck in the final 30 seconds, 1-0.

- The Garnet threatened in the second quarter with consecutive shots on goal from Brooke Findlay and Fuselier to open the stanza. Johns Hopkins then responded at the other end with consecutive shots on goal, which were both denied by Conklin. The standout keeper made another save later in the quarter to blank the Blue Jays in the second stanza.

- The Blue Jays expanded their lead with an insurance goal in the 31st minute. The team earned a corner attempt early in the second half and capitalized with their second goal. Swarthmore tightened up their defense has they held the Blue Jays without a shot for the remainder of the quarter. Sophia Hitchingham found an open cage towards the end of the stanza, but was turned away by a defensive save.

- Johns Hopkins controlled most of the opportunities in the fourth quarter. The team eventually broke through with its third goal in the 59th minute to expand its lead. The Garnet had a couple penalty corners in the quarter, but were only able to generate one shot on goal from Fuselier.
