No. 21 Field Hockey Earns Crucial Conference Victory at Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Pa. - The No. 21 Swarthmore College field hockey team took care of business with a 2-1 victory over Washington College on Wednesday afternoon. The victory marked the program's first win at Washington College since October 10, 1995.

With one game remaining in the regular season, the Garnet took a big step towards securing an opening-round bye in the Centennial Conference Tournament. Swarthmore currently sits in third place and one game behind Franklin & Marshall, who the Garnet hold the tiebreaker against in the playoff standings. The Diplomats wrap up their regular season schedule against No. 3 Johns Hopkins, while Swarthmore travels to Haverford College.

The Garnet held off the Shorewomen with two opening half goals from Anna Stancofski and Katherine Kohn. Stancofski struck early in the contest with a score in the third minute, while Kohn added on the decisive second tally right before halftime. The Shorewomen scored their lone goal in the final minute of action as they were unable to climb out of an early deficit.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stancofski cashed in on a loose ball in front of the cage to put the Garnet ahead in the third minute. Following consecutive corner attempts from Stancofski, Jackie Crowley fired a shot on goal, which was saved by the goalie. However, Stancofski was stationed at the left corner of the cage to tap home the second-chance opportunity. The Shorewomen were held without a shot attempt for the opening quarter as the Garnet controlled play early in the contest.

- The Garnet nearly added another score early in the second quarter after a Stancofski corner. Amelia Landry fired two quality shots on goal, but was denied by a couple remarkable stops. The Shorewomen countered with a couple shots late in the quarter, but the Garnet were able to add on with another score before intermission. Following a restart, Landry chipped the ball to Kohn in front of the cage. Kohn then snuck the ball between the goalie's pads for her eighth goal of the season.

- The Garnet controlled the third quarter to keep the Shorewomen in check. Swarthmore recorded the only two corners of the stanza and were responsible for the lone shot attempt.

- Washington threatened in the fourth quarter as they outshot Swarthmore 4-1. Cassandra Conklin made an excellent stop in the 58th minute, but the Shorewomen were able to cut their deficit in half with a goal in the final minute of regulation.
