ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against a strong Muhlenberg College squad in Centennial Conference action on Wednesday night.
The goalkeepers were not very busy during the contest as the teams combined for just four shots on goal.
Christian Bignotti, the reigning Centennial Defensive Player of the Week, made three saves to pick up his first shutout of the season.
The result allowed the Garnet to keep their hold on the final Centennial Conference Tournament spot with two games remaining in the regular season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet's lone shot on goal came early on in the ninth minute.
Len Yamabe sprung
Tejas Sarna for a breakaway with a thru ball. Sarna outraced a charging defender and got off a sliding shot as he avoided a tackle but the goalkeeper came up with the save.
- Bignotti came up with a big save in the 11
th minute as he aggressively charged a loose ball near the top of the box. The Mules attacker was able to get to the ball and fire a shot but Bignotti got his hands up to deflect it away.
- In the second half, Bignotti had another key stop in the 69
th minute as he dove to his right to knock away a Muhlenberg offer from just outside the top of the box.
- The Mules nearly took the lead in the 73
rd minute, blasting a free kick just above a leaping Bignotti but off the crossbar. Bignotti's final save came in the 84
th minute as he again came off his line aggressively and was able to turn away a shot in the box.
