Field Hockey Stuns No. 22 Franklin & Marshall in Historic Win

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team dominated No. 22 Franklin & Marshall College, 4-0, in a complete team effort on Wednesday night. The Garnet snapped a 14-game losing streak, which dated back to 2007, versus the Diplomats as they shut out their Centennial rival for the first time since 1999.

Katherine Kohn highlighted three different goal scores with a pair of tallies to lead the squad. Kohn recorded the opening two goals, while Jackie Crowley and Sophia Hitchingham added insurance goals in the fourth quarter. Kohn currently sits second on the team with seven goals, while Hitchingham maintained her team lead with her eighth goal.

Swarthmore out shot the Diplomats 22-8 and held a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners. The defense allowed very few scoring chances as they rallied for their fifth shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore weathered the storm early as the Diplomats controlled pace for the first half of the opening stanza. Franklin & Marshall had a quality scoring chance in the ninth minute, but fired a shot just high over the crossbar. The Garnet began to turn things around later in the quarter with a couple shots on goal, but were unable to break the scoreless tie.

- The Garnet held the Diplomats without a shot in the second quarter as they carried momentum from the end of the opening stanza. After failing to connect on a trio of corners, Katherine Kohn put the Garnet on the board following an Anna Stancofski corner attempt. Stancofski played the corner to Deborah Kim, who touched the ball to Magdelana Jordan at the center of the box. The first-year then fired a shot towards the right side of the cage, which was tipped past the goalie by the stick of Kohn, 1-0.

- Swarthmore wasted no time adding to their lead in the second half. Kohn connected once more in the 36th minute for her seventh goal of the season. The junior received the ball on the right side of the cage before moving towards midfield and then flipping a backhand attempt to the opposite post, 2-0.

- The Garnet added to their lead in the fourth quarter to put an exclamation point on an outstanding performance. Crowley contributed her third goal of the season after finishing her own second-chance opportunity. Brooke Findlay played a centering pass to Crowley from the right post to set up the scoring chance. The senior had her first attempt saved, but drilled the rebound home for the third score of the game. Hitchingham then added another tally moments later after Elizabeth Zack played a centering pass from the right side, 4-0.
