Volleyball Suffers First Centennial Loss versus Gettysburg

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team dropped its first conference matchup of the season against a tough Gettysburg College squad, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon. Both teams are now 4-1 overall in Centennial Conference play. 

Jordan Perry and Kaylee Zhang posted double-digit kills to pace Swarthmore's attack. Perry paced the team with 11 kills, while Zhang added 10 kills. Zhang also contributed on the other side of the ball with a team-high 16 digs. 

First-year Emily Sun played well for the Garnet with a career-high five aces with no service errors. She also added nine assists, eight digs and one block. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore led very early in the opening set, but fell behind after a couple of Gettysburg runs. The Bullets rallied for five-straight points to take their first lead and then put together four-unanswered to expand their lead to four points, 15-11. Following a Garnet timeout, the Bullets put together a 5-3 run to force a final Swarthmore timeout, 20-14. The Bullets held on to their advantage as they claimed the first set, 25-18. 

- The Garnet got off to better start in set two with a 14-10 lead to force the Bullets to take the set's first timeout. Swarthmore closed out the run with four-straight points, which was highlighted by a pair of Zhang kills. Following their opponent's timeout, the Garnet took a timeout of their own after their lead shrunk to 18-15. Gettysburg fought back as they pulled within one point until Swarthmore clinched the set with consecutive kills from Zhang and Zindzhi Montgomery, 25-22.

- Gettysburg captured momentum early in a pivotal third set. The Bullets got out to a 12-9 lead to force a Swarthmore timeout. The Bullets capped off their run with three-straight points to overtake the lead. Gettysburg remained in control as they exited the timeout with a 6-3 run, which was capped off by three-straight points, 18-12. The Garnet climbed back into the set with four-straight kills, which were highlighted by an Angelina Heminway block to force a timeout, 22-20. However, the Bullets countered with three-consecutive points to put away the set, 25-20. 

- The Bullets threatened early in the fourth set as they raced out to an 8-3 advantage. Swarthmore was able to gain ground as they shrunk their deficit to one point, but the Bullets rallied for a 5-2 run to expand their lead to four points, 18-14. Swarthmore came as close as three points, but could not dig themselves out of an early deficit, 25-19.
