Men's Soccer Tops Dickinson For First Centennial Win

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's soccer team picked up its first Centennial Conference victory of the season on Saturday, defeating visiting Dickinson College, 2-1. It was the second straight win overall for the Garnet.

Adrien Marcelli and Tejas Sarna found the back of the net for Swarthmore, who finished with a 14-8 edge in shots and an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Red Devils closed the gap to one with under eight minutes to go but the Garnet held strong and secured the win.

The triumph propelled Swarthmore past Dickinson and into the final Centennial Conference playoff spot with three games remaining in the regular season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Marcelli put the Garnet in front early, netting the first shot of the game in the fifth minute. He took a free kick from just outside the box and blasted it into the upper right corner for his third goal of the year.

- Antonio Callegari nearly put Swarthmore up two in the 18th minute. Callegari was challenged by the goalkeeper for a ball in the box, leaving the net unoccupied. Callegari was able to boot the ball towards the cage but a Red Devils defender got back and cleared it off the goal line.

- In the second half, Sarna became the one to give the Garnet a two-goal advantage, scoring his second of the season in the 61st minute. Len Yamabe sent the ball upfield to Callegari, who then centered to Sarna. Sarna dribbled to his right and beat the goalie with a shot just inside the right post.

- Dickinson got on the board in the 83rd minute. A pass across the field resulted in a service into the box. A Red Devils attacker slipped behind the Swarthmore defense and finished the ball into the right corner to make it 2-1. However, the Garnet did not allow another shot the rest of the way to close out the victory.
