No. 18 Women’s Soccer Battles to Draw Against No. 8 Hopkins in Nationally-Ranked Showdown

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 18 Swarthmore College women's soccer team forced a draw versus No. 8 Johns Hopkins in an intense and highly-competitive, nationally-ranked showdown on Wednesday night.

The highly-anticipated battle did not disappoint as each team went toe-to-toe for the top spot in the Centennial Conference. The Blue Jays struck first with an opening half score until Liesel Blau tied the game with a clutch goal in the 73rd minute.

Lila Travers had the best game of her career with a season-high 11 saves. The sophomore was outstanding for the Garnet as she made a plethora of highlight-reel saves to give her offense an opportunity to earn the draw.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Veronica Gibbons fired the game's first shot in the opening minute, but had the attempt saved by the Blue Jays' keeper. Later in the half, Gibbons was turned away once more after she fired a quality shot from five-yards out. The Johns Hopkins keeper held her ground as she corralled the attempt.

- Lauren Lior made things difficult for Johns Hopkins with her elite speed. The first-year fired a team-best three shots on the half, but was unable to find the back of the net. Lior had an excellent run at the ball after intercepting an errant pass in the attacking zone, but had possession wrestled away by the Blue Jays' defender.

- Johns Hopkins scored the lone goal of the opening half in the 21st minute to head into halftime with a one goal advantage. The Garnet defense did an excellent job of limiting chances, while they matched the Blue Jays chances at the other end.

- Travers was the star of the second half with a handful of highlight-reel saves for the Garnet. The sophomore made a couple outstanding diving attempts, which included a leaping stop to rob the Blue Jays of a likely goal. The keep jumped towards the far post to deflect a strike that was headed towards the upper corner.

- Blau came through with the equalizer in the 73rd minute to tie the game. Marea Lee used her speed to carry the ball up from the defensive zone. She then connected with Ava Gizzie from the right wing, who fed a beautiful pass across the box to Blau. The first-year then delivered as she beat the keeper low to tie the game, 1-1.

- Travers came up huge numerous times for the Garnet as she was crucial in preserving the team's hard-fought draw. The sophomore made arguably her best save of the night when she stunned the Blue Jays with a unbelievable kick save to neutralize another high-quality scoring chance in the 82nd minute.
