Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 9 Men’s Basketball Falls to No. 12 Johns Hopkins, Sees Win Streak Snapped

BALTIMORE, MD - Taken down for just the second time this season, the Swarthmore men's basketball team fell to No. 12 Johns Hopkins University 77-67 on Saturday, Jan. 28th.

Offensively, the Garnet saw double digit performances from senior Colin Shaw (13), senior George Visconti (13) and junior Vinny DeAngelo (10). DeAngelo and Visconti also served as anchors on the defensive end, both recording two steals while DeAngelo pulled down eight rebounds and Visconti notched six.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- While both squads failed to find the basket through the first minute and a half of play, Shaw snapped the cold streak, draining a smooth jumper for the Garnet's first lead of the game. First year Cal Hanson would grow that advantage just 30 seconds later, nailing a triple to put Swarthmore up 5-0. However, despite two early turnovers, Johns Hopkins would respond to the Garnet's offensive success, tying the contest a 9-9 before taking the lead, going up by as many as ten points halfway through the first period.

- Thanks to a triple from DeAngelo and two foul shots from senior Michael Caprise, the Garnet were able to cut Hopkins' advantage in half, down 25-20 with eight minutes left to play in the period. Carrying that momentum, two clutch back-to-back threes from sophomore Aiden Godfrey eliminated the Blue Jays' lead entirely, tying the game at 26-all with 6:49 left in the half. While both squads would proceed to exchange baskets for the remainder of the period, Hopkins was able to secure some breathing room, with the Garnet going into the break down 38-35.

- While Hopkins kicked off the second half by extending their lead to four, two consecutive triples from Shaw and Hanson gave the Garnet a 43-41 lead, their first since four minutes into the first half. Swarthmore would extend their advantage off of free throws from Visconti and a hook shot from senior George Corzine, leading 47-43 with 13:21 left to play. However that margin would not last, as four straight points from the Blue Jays tied the game at 47-all two and half minutes later.

- While both teams would trade baskets for the next five minutes, the Garnet eventually fell behind Hopkins' offensive production, trailing the Blue Jays 60-53 with five minutes left to play. Swarthmore were unable to close the gap, ultimately falling to Hopkins 77-67.

- The Garnet are now 17-2, 11-1 in conference play.
