Women’s Basketball Wins OT Thriller Versus Dickinson

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team took down Dickinson College, 62-56, in an overtime thriller on Saturday afternoon.

Alyssa Hayashi led the way in a huge victory for the Garnet. The sophomore had 17 points with three rebounds and two assists. Hayashi was also excellent from the free throw line when the team needed her the most - shooting 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Dana Bandurick scored in double figures with 10 points, nine rebounds, three assists and six steals in her best game of the season. Kim Kockenmeister also played an essential role in the team's victory with seven points, which included a clutch three-pointer to send the game to overtime and a go-ahead jumper to take the lead in overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bandurick and Kockenmeister opened the contest with layups to put the Garnet ahead early, 4-1. Hayashi then expanded the team's lead with a three-pointer to jump ahead by five points. Moments later, Carolina Lopez gave the Garnet their largest lead of the quarter with a layup to take a seven-point advantage. Swarthmore ended the opening stanza with a 17-13 lead following a Caroline Sellinger three-pointer.

- The Garnet closed out one of their best halves of the season with a strong second quarter. After Dickinson hit a three-pointer to cut their deficit to one point, Bandurick and Sellinger added consecutive jumpers to capture momentum. Sellinger then capped off six-unanswered Swarthmore points with her seventh point of the half to pull ahead by seven points, 23-16. Norah Wingfield caught fire at the end of the half with a pair of baskets as the Garnet headed into intermission with a 33-22 lead.

- Dickinson climbed back into the game with a lopsided third quarter as they outscored the Garnet, 17-6. The Red Devils tied the game on a pair of free throws heading into the fourth quarter as the Garnet struggled from the field, 39-39.

- Swarthmore's second half shooting struggles continued into the fourth quarter, but the resilient Garnet were able to hang around and remain within striking distance. Hayashi shot 5-of-6 from the free throw line to help keep the Garnet close. The sophomore's final free throw of the half put the Garnet up by one point with 2:04 left. Trailing by three points with seven seconds left, Kockenmeister answered the call with a clutch three-pointer from the wing to send the game into overtime.

- Hayashi opened overtime with a three-pointer, but the Red Devils quickly answered with a long ball of their own. Kockenmeister then put the Garnet ahead once more with a jumper at the 1:42 mark. Sellinger and Anna Hansson then helped distance themselves from the Red Devils with free throws late in overtime, while Kockenmeister sealed the game with a steal on Dickinson's final possession.
