Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Loses Lead Late, Falls To Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Still searching for their first win of the new year, the Swarthmore women's basketball team were taken down by Centennial rival Washington College by a score of 63-60 on Thursday, Jan. 12th.

Offensively, the Garnet saw three double digit performances, with sophomore Alyssa Hayashi, senior Kim Kockenmeister and sophomore Katelyn Becker putting up 14, 13 and 12 points respectively. Kockenmesiter also played a big role on the defensive end, tallying five steals, four rebounds and a block.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- While Washington College drew first blood in the opening seconds of the first quarter, the Garnet struck back swiftly, taking a 7-5 lead two and a half minutes into the contest. Both squads would proceed to trade baskets back and forth, with the Garnet able to secure some breathing room near the end of the period, going into the break up 13-10.

- The Garnet carried their offensive momentum into the second quarter, scoring seven points before the shorewomen could respond. Baskets from Kockenmeister, Hayashi, Becker and senior Dana Bandurick grew Swarthmore's lead to 18 with 4:11 left before the half. Becker had a career night for the Garnet, putting up personal best stats in nearly every statistical category, including points (12), 3-pointers (2), assists (6), and steals (2). While Washington were able to close that gap somewhat, the horn sounded with Swarthmore sporting a comfortable 36-21 lead.

- Thanks to stellar shooting, the Garnet were able to regain their 18 point advantage halfway through the third quarter. However, Swarthmore were unable to maintain that success, as the shots simply stopped falling. The Garnet would not score for the rest of the period, only leading Washington by five by the end of the third.

- The Garnet's offensive woes would continue into the fourth, with the shorewomen tying the game at 47-all with 8:59 left to play. While the Garnet would regain their lead, Washington would tie the contest once again at 58-58, eventually taking the lead with 23 seconds left and never relinquishing it, downing Swarthmore 63-60.

- The Garnet are now 4-9, 2-6 in conference play.
