Women's Basketball's Comeback Falls Short Versus Johns Hopkins

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team fell to Johns Hopkins University, 61-49, on Tuesday night. 

After falling behind by 14 points at the half, the Garnet stormed back in the second as they cut their deficit to as many as four points. Swarthmore outscored Johns Hopkins by two points in the second half.

Kim Kockenmeister led the Garnet with 13 points and six steals, while Anna Hansson also recorded double digits with 12 points. Carolina Lopez put together a well-rounded stat sheet with four points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Dana Bandurick made her return to the court after missing the beginning of the season. The 2021-22 All-Centennial First-team selection logged nine minutes with two points in her debut. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Johns Hopkins jumped out to an early 6-0 advantage, before Hansson opened the scoring for the Garnet with a layup. Kockenmeister soon added another bucket, while an Alyssa Hayashi layup trimmed the Blue Jays lead to three points, 9-6. The Jays capped off a 12-0 run to end the quarter with a buzzer-beater three, 21-6.

- Kockenmeister opened the second half scoring with a pair of free throws, while Bandurick soon added her first point of the season at the foul line. Norah Wingfield knocked down a three-pointer on an assist from Kockenmeister to end the half on a high note as Swarthmore pulled within 14 points, 32-18.

- The Garnet rallied behind a strong third quarter as they climbed back into the game. Hayashi cut the team's deficit to 11 points with 5:58 remaining in the third stanza. After the Blue Jays captured some momentum back, Swarthmore answered with consecutive baskets from Lopez and Kockenmeister to pull within 11 points. The Blue Jays ended the quarter with a 47-35 advantage.

- Kockenmeister opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to make it a 10 point game, before Bandurick added a free throw to pull within single digits. The Garnet scored their sixth-straight point with a triple from Kockenmeister to trim their deficit to six points. Moments later, Caroline Selinger added a three-pointer to pull within five points. Swarthmore came as close as four points, but were unable to overtake the Blue Jays, who closed the game on a 8-0 run.
