Box Score 3 BALTIMORE, Md. - Wrapping up their fall slate, the Swarthmore women's tennis team put up impressive results at the ITA Regional Championships this weekend, competing from Sept. 23rd - Sept. 25th.
The Garnet took on opponents from all across the region, facing off against: Stevens Institute of Technology, Christopher Newport University, Franklin & Marshall College, Johns Hopkins University, Haverford College, Carnegie Mellon University, Sweet Briar College, University of Mary Washington and Washington and Lee University. On the weekend, Swarthmore posted a 9-7 record in singles play, and a 3-4 record in doubles.
FRIDAY, SEPT. 23RD
SINGLES
- Starting off the day strong, the Garnet captured six wins in the round of 64, advancing six of seven Swarthmore players.
- Sophomore
Nathalie Williams (6-0, 6-0), junior
Erica Stutz (6-1, 6-3), first year
Riya Rao (6-2, 6-1) and first year
Kathleen Shiffer (6-2, 6-2) secured dominant round of 64 wins, while juniors
Daniela Padron-Castillo (6-2, 2-6, 10-6) and
Jenny Lewis (6-4, 1-6, 10-2) notched more hard-fought victories.
- Williams (6-1, 6-0) and Lewis (6-0, 6-2) went on to win their round of 32 matchups later in the day, advancing to represent the Garnet in the round of 16.
- Competing in the Blue A draw of the tournament, first year
Lisa Messier took home two wins for the Garnet in both the quarterfinals (8-5) and the semifinals (8-6).
DOUBLES
- The Garnet saw similar success in doubles play, with two of Swarthmore's pairs taking the win in their round of 32 matchups.
- The duos of Williams/Shiffer and Padron-Castillo/Lewis dominated in their matchups, both taking their contests by scores of 8-2.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 24TH
SINGLES
- Competing in the round of 16, both Lewis and Williams fell to their opponents, with Williams losing 6-2, 7-5, and Lewis losing 6-3, 6-1.
- In the Blue A draw, Messier fought hard in the finals before eventually falling to her opponent (8-7[7-2]).
DOUBLES
- Representing Swarthmore in the round of 16, the duos of Williams/Shiffer and Padron-Castillo/Lewis both battled hard.
- Padron-Castillo/Lewis would fall to their Washington and Lee opponent by a score of 8-1.
- Williams/Shiffer cruised to a comfortable 8-1 win in the round of 16 before eventually falling 8-5 in the quarterfinals.

Not competing again until the spring, the Garnet will take the court against Stockton University on Saturday, Feb. 18th at 2:00 p.m.
