BALTIMORE, Md. - Wrapping up a three game road stint, the Swarthmore field hockey team fell to #6 Johns Hopkins University by a score of 1-0 on Saturday, Sept. 24th.
Â
In a game dominated by defenses, first-year
Cassandra Conklin was a brick wall in goal for the Garnet, tallying seven saves and turning away 15 Johns Hopkins Penalty Corners.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Â Â Â Â Swarthmore's defense stood stout throughout the contest, holding a red-hot Blue Jays team in check, an offense that had put up nine goals in their previous game.
-Â Â Â Â Despite Johns Hopkins having ample offensive opportunities, putting up 19 shots and having 16 penalty corners, they were turned away at nearly every opportunity by the Garnet's rock solid defensive unit, only able to sneak one shot past Conklin three minutes into the third period for the game's only goal.
-Â Â Â Â While Swarthmore was unable to find the back of the cage, they were able to create quite a few chances on the offensive side of the ball. The Garnet tallied 12 shots on the day, with four of them being on Target, and had 12 penalty corners, putting significant pressure on Johns Hopkins' keeper. Leading the way for Swarthmore on offense were senior
Martina Kampel with three shots, sophomore
Sophia Hitchingham with two and junior
Deborah Kim with two.Â
-Â Â The Garnet are now 0-1 in Centennial Conference Play, 4-3 overall.Â
