Box Score 2 SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Starting off their fall season strong, the Swarthmore men's tennis team put on an impressive showing last weekend at the Swarthmore Invitational, Friday, Sept. 9th through Sunday, Sept. 11th.
The Garnet took on Johns Hopkins University, Stevens Institute of Technology and The College of New Jersey in singles and doubles competition. Swarthmore posted winning records on the weekend in both singles and doubles, going 22-13 in singles play and 11-7 in doubles competition.
FRIDAY: SWARTHMORE vs. JOHNS HOPKINS
SINGLES
- Taking on a Centennial Conference rival in their first match of the season, the Garnet fought hard. Despite dropping two matches early in singles play, Swarthmore rallied back, tying the score at 2-all with hard fought wins from first-year
Michael Melnikov and senior
Josiah Myers-Lipton. The matches for both Melnikov and Myers-Lipton went to three sets, with Malnikov coming out on top 6-4, 4-6, 10-4, and Myers-Lipton triumphing 6-5, 5-7, 10-7.
- Swarthmore would continue to see singles success against the Blue Jays, with sophomore
Kevin Jiang (6-4, 3-6, 10-4), junior
Phil Rehwinkel (6-1, 6-4) and first-year
Aamish Pal (6-2, 6-0) all securing wins for the Garnet.
DOUBLES
- Despite struggling against the Blue Jays early, the Garnet found success later on in the day. The first-year duo of
Lalith Suresh and Pal captured an 8-4 win, while the pair of senior
Hellman Zhao and Rehwinel notched a W in a hotly contested 8-7(4) victory.
SATURDAY: SWARTHMORE vs. FRANKLIN & MARSHALL
SINGLES
- Starting the second day of play against another Centennial rival, the Garnet edged out F&M, taking four singles wins to their three.
- All four Swarthmore wins came in comfortable fashion, with Myers-Lipton (6-1, 6-2), Suresh (6-3, 6-0), Pal (6-1, 6-2) and sophomore
Jay Jones (6-3, 6-4) all only needing two sets to close out their victories.
DOUBLES
- The Garnet saw continued success in doubles play over the Diplomats, with the duos of first-year
Charley Force/sophomore Max Pogorolev (8-1) and senior
Minh Nguyen/Jones (8-5) both taking home wins for Swarthmore.
SATURDAY: SWARTHMORE vs. TCNJ
SINGLES
- Taking on their third opponent of the weekend, the Garnet posted an 8-4 record against the Lions in singles play.
- Continuing his undefeated outing, Myers-Lipton captured his third singles win of the invitational, taking down his TCNJ opponent handily, 7-5, 6-2.
- On top of Myers-Lipton's success, each Garnet player needed only two sets to close out their wins, with Melnikov (6-2, 6-4), first-year
Max Lindstrom (6-2, 7-5), Suresh (6-2, 6-1) and Rehwinkel (6-2, 6-1) all notching easy victories.
- Swarthmore would take on TCNJ in single set singles matches as well, in which the squads would split 3-3. Lindstrom (8-6), first-year
Andres Fente (8-2) and first-year
Utham Kodurit would all claim wins for the Garnet.
DOUBLES
- Nearly sweeping their doubles competition against TCNJ, the Garnet would win five of the six matches.
- The duos of Melnikov/Force (8-7(5)), Patel/Fente (8-6) and Lindstrom/Rehwinkel (8-7(5)) would all come out on top in hotly contested matchups, while the pairs of Fente/Pogorelov (8-3) and sophomore
Graham Hadesman/Myer-Lipton captured more comfortable wins.
SUNDAY: SWARTHMORE vs. JOHNS HOPKINS
SINGLES
- Taking on Johns Hopkins for the second time this weekend, the Garnet saw much more favorable results than their first outing.
- Swarthmore swept the Blue Jays in singles matchups, with all but one match only going to two sets. Lindstrom (6-2, 6-4), Patel (6-4, 6-4), Suresh (6-2, 6-3) and Rehwinkel (6-3, 6-4) all closed out their matches in two sets, while Myers-Lipton took the win in a back and forth 6-2, 1-6, 10-3 marathon.
DOUBLES
- The Garnet saw similar success in doubles play, taking two of the three matches over the Blue Jays.
- The pairs of Patel/Melnikov (8-1) and Suresh/Lindstrom (8-6) notched wins for Swarthmore, with Patel, Melnikov and Lindstrom all getting revenge for their Friday doubles losses.

Closing out their fall slate, the Garnet will compete in the ITA Regional Tournament from Friday, Sept. 30th - Sunday, Oct. 2nd.
