Women’s Tennis Impresses at Swat Invite, Shiffer Goes 6-0 for Weekend

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team opened their fall season with an impressive showing at their home Swat Invite on Saturday and Sunday.

Swarthmore took on Franklin & Marshall College, Haverford College and Washington College in singles and doubles competition. The Garnet put together a 28-3 record on the weekend, while sweeping singles and doubles matches versus the Diplomats and Shorewomen. 

Kathleen Shiffer was outstanding in her collegiate debut with a 6-0 record for the weekend. 

SATURDAY: SWARTHMORE vs. F&M
SINGLES
- The Garnet swept Franklin & Marshall in singles matches. Nathalie Williams won in singles action (6-2, 6-2), while Shiffer picked up her first collegiate victory (6-1, 6-1).

- Erica Stutz bested her opponent in a tightly-contested battle (6-4, 6-4). Daniela Padron-Castillo then took care of business with a victory (6-2, 6-1) over the Shorewomen. 

- Senior standout Crystal Xu was victorious in her singles action (6-2, 6-0), while first-years Lola Diaz (7-5, 6-1), Riya Rao (6-4, 6-1) and Lisa Messier (6-0, 6-0) all won their debut matches. Spencer Watts also closed out singles action with a win (7-5, 6-4).

DOUBLES
- After earning a national championship selection last spring, Xu and Williams returned to action with an 8-4 victory to open the 2022-23 campaign. 

- Stutz and Shiffer defeated their opponents 8-2, while Watts and Messier also produced an 8-2 victory in doubles action. Diaz and Marisa Geib won comfortably with an 8-1 win, before Rao and Ruthie Njagi closed out the doubles sweep with a 8-4 victory. 

SATURDAY: SWARTHMORE vs. WASHINGTON COLLEGE
SINGLES
- The Garnet finished off day one with another singles sweep over Washington College opponents. Williams earned her third win of the day with a singles victory (6-3, 6-0), while Shiffer won decisively (6-0, 6-0) as the first-year continued to impress. 

- Diaz battled to win a tight three-set matchup (6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4)) over her opponent, while fellow first-years Rao (6-0, 6-3) and Messier (6-1, 6-3) also swept singles action on opening day. M. Geib closed out singles action with her first singles victory of the season (6-2, 6-2).

DOUBLES
- Stutz and Messier won their first doubles match as a pairing with an 8-3 decision, while Padron-Castillo and Shiffer also won 8-3 in doubles. Watts and Diaz helped close out the doubles sweep with a 8-2 decision. 

SUNDAY: SWARTHMORE vs. HAVERFORD
SINGLES
- Shiffer picked up where she left off with a singles victory to open Sunday's competition. The first-year won 6-3, 6-2, over her Haverford opponent to sweep all three of her singles matchups this weekend. 

- Rao also had a perfect weekend of singles action with her third victory. The first-year battled as she bested her opponent in three sets (5-7, 6-3, 10-6).

- Watts was victorious in singles action with another three-set decision. The junior dug herself out of an early deficit to take the final two sets (1-6, 7-6, 10-4).

DOUBLES
- Williams and Shiffer set the tone with a 8-5 victory in doubles action. Both individuals went undefeated on the weekend in singles and doubles action.

- Stutz and Messier were also victorious in doubles play as they bested their opponents 8-1. 

UP NEXT
The Garnet return to action next weekend at the ITA Regionals as they wrap up their fall slate.
