SWARTHMORE, Pa - In their first loss of the year, the Swarthmore women's soccer team was edged by #1 Christopher Newport University 3-2 on Saturday, Sept. 17th.
Rallying back from a 3-0 deficit, the Garnet notched two late goals to bring the game within one. Finding the back of the net for Swarthmore were seniors Meghan Ruoff and
Alice Onyango-Opiyo.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite falling behind 3-0 with just under 20 minutes left in the game, the Garnet refused to yield. Taking advantage of a corner opportunity, Ruoff sent the ball arcing beautifully through the air, managing to sneak it by both the keeper untouched into the side of the net for Swarthmore's first goal of the day.
- Still looking to rally, the Garnet would find paydirt once again in the 88th minute. Taking advantage of a perfectly served in corner from fellow senior
Anwyn Urquhart, Onyango-Opiyo headed the ball in for Swarthmore's second goal.
- While the Garnet would not be able to find the tying goal, they were not without opportunities, able to create significant offensive chances. On the game, the Garnet fired off nine shots, six of which were on goal, while also having six corner kicks. Many of these opportunities came as a result of excellent forward play from seniors
Kim Kockenmeister,
Amelia Mounts and
Elizabeth Brown. Kockenmesiter put up two shots for the Garnet, while all three played for more than 60 minutes.
- Holding a red hot Captains offense to just three goals, the Garnet's defense proved stout as well. Senior
Nicte Machado-Aco served a pivotal role in halting many Christopher Newport attacks, while senior
Lillian Keller was an anchor in goal throughout the first half, notching two saves.
- Matching up well with the defending national champions, the Garnet are the first team to put up two goals on Christopher Newport Since October 12th, 2019.
