SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's soccer team remained unbeaten and earned their fourth-straight shutout with a 2-0 victory over Moravian University in their home opener on Wednesday night.
The Garnet have not surrendered a goal since the 27th minute at Marywood University on September 3. The team has only conceded two goals on the season.
Keren Maze opened the scoring in the 36th minute, while
Allie Zitelli added an insurance goal in the 71st minute. Both goals marked the first of the season for Maze and Zitelli as they became the seventh and eighth Garnet players to record a goal this season.
The story of the game was defense as the Garnet shutdown their opponent once again. Swarthmore outshot Moravian 25-2 and did not allow a shot on goal. The Garnet also held a commanding 12-1 advantage in corner kicks as they remainined on the attack for the majority of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The opening half was slated heavily towards Swarthmore as the Garnet outshot their opponents 15-1 and took nine corner kicks, while keeping the ball in the attacking zone for the majority of the stanza. Early in the contest, Abby Chang had an excellent look at the net when she beat a pair of defenders inside the box. The sophomore fired a strike towards the goal, but missed just wide.
- Swarthmore broke through with the opening goal in the 36th minute. After a flurry of corner kicks, Megan Ruoff's corner found the foot of Maze on the farside of the box. The sophomore deflected the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.
- The Garnet maintained pressure in the second half. Amelia Mounts generated two corner kicks with consecutive quality shot attempts in the 58th minute. Ruoff then fired another shot on goal, which was corralled by the Greyhounds keeper. Moments later, Moravian generated their first corner kick, but the attempt was well-defended by the Garnet.
- Swarthmore struck again in the 71st minute with a goal from Zitelli. Emme Hansard set up the score by playing a ball into traffic, Zitelli then finished in front of the keeper to add an insurance tally.
