Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Garnet Invitational

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's volleyball team completed the sweep of their home Garnet Invitational with two victories over Kean University, 3-1, and Salisbury University, 3-0, on Saturday.

The Garnet took today's opener in four sets against Kean. Trisha Razdan and Kaylee Zhang led Swarthmore's attack with 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Zhang also collected six service aces, while Razdan had three. Zindzhi Montgomery also had a big match defensively with four blocks and added three kills.

Swarthmore completed the double-header sweep in dominant fashion as they took care of business in three sets versus a talented Seagulls squad. Chloe Mayhue and Zhang tallied double-digit kills, while Ellie Streeper tallied 20 digs on the defensive side.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet opened the first set with six-unanswered points to force the Cougars to burn an early timeout. Kean later took its first lead with a 12-4 run as they went ahead 19-18. Swarthmore battled back and retook the lead as they ended the stanza with three-straight points. Razdan had three kills during the run in between a Zhang service ace as the Garnet took the opening set 25-22. Zhang was a force in the set with five kills and two aces. 

- Swarthmore got off to another fast start with a 5-0 run to open the second set, but Kean battled back with five-unanswered points of their own. Later in the set, the Garnet regained separation with a 6-1 run to build its lead to 15-9, which forced the Cougars to use a timeout. In a game of runs, Kean then took the lead with a 8-1 run following its timeout. The teams swapped leads late in the stanza before the Cougars took the set 25-23.

- The Garnet forced another early timeout with a 9-3 run to open the third set. Swarthmore capped off the run with five-unanswered points, which ended in a Grace Hegland kill. Following the timeout, the Garnet maintained pressure as they expanded its lead to 16-7. Zhang led the charge with three kills during the 6-3 stretch. Montgomery helped claim the set with a forceful return as the Garnet went on to win the third stanza, 25-16.

- Razdan had consecutive kills, before the Garnet blocked back-to-back attacks to take a 5-0 advantage in set four. Kean would respond with four-unanswered points, before the Garnet matched the Cougars run and forced an early timeout. The Garnet went on to clinch the match comfortably, 25-15.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Swarthmore fell behind early after Salisbury scored five-straight points to take a 10-8 advantage. However, the Garnet responded with a 6-1 run to give the squad a three-point lead. The Seagulls threatened with a late 6-1 run as they pulled ahead by four points, 21-17. The Garnet then flipped a switch and rattled off eight-unanswered points to finish the set, 25-21. 

- After closing out the opening set in dominant fashion, the Garnet carried momentum into a strong second stanza. Swarthmore led from start to finish, but opened things up with a 10-0 run midway through the set to take a commanding 16-4 advantage. Swarthmore went on to win the set 25-10.

- Both teams battled in a tightly-contested third set. Swarthmore took the lead midway through the stanza with six-straight points. The teams exchanged leads later in the set, before Swarthmore clinched the match with three-straight points.
