SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Improving to 3-1 on the season, the Swarthmore field hockey team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology 3-0 on Saturday, Sept. 10th.
Â
Having an excellent night on offense, sophomore
Katherine Kohn notched two goals and one assists, while senior
Martina Kampel tallied two assists on the night. On the defensive end of the field, the Garnet secured their second shutout of the year, with first-year goalie
Cassandra Conklin adding two more saves to her excellent season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Â Â Â Â With time very literally expiring in the first quarter, sophomore
Sophia Hitchingham served in a beautiful penalty corner. While first-year
Grace Chen's first shot was blocked, Kohn snagged the rebound and pushed the ball past the keeper, securing the Garnet a 1-0 lead going into the break.
-Â Â Â Â While neither team was able to generate any more points throughout the second or third periods, Swarthmore was not comfortable with just a 1-0 lead. Kohn took advantage of another penalty corner, this time by sophomore
Grace Fuselier, and an assist from Kampel to secure her second goal of the night and give Swarthmore a 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the fourth period.
-Â Â Â Â Looking to put the game thoroughly out of reach, the Garnet found paydirt once again just two minutes later, with Fuselier scoring on a rebound from Kohn and Kampel. Swarthmore's dominant 3-0 lead was enough to close out the match.Â
