Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Starts Season Strong, Takes Down Widener 3-1

CHESTER, Pa. - Starting the season in dominant fashion, the Swarthmore Women's Field Hockey team earned its first victory of the 2022 season, topping Widener by a score of 3-1 on the evening of Thursday, Sept. 1st.

Guided by a trio of goal scorers, the Garnet saw its offensive attack led by sophomore Sophia Hitchingman, senior Martina Kampel and junior Deborah Kim, all of whom tallied a point for the Garnet on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Taking advantage of a penalty corner served in by Hitchingham, Kim slammed in the first goal of the game and the season for the Garnet, with senior Callie Cho coming through with the assist. Swarthmore held Widener scoreless on the period and went into the first break up 1-0.

- Making the most of a Widener yellow card, Hitchingham drove past the defense and buried her shot in the back of the cage, putting the Garnet up 2-0 with less than two minutes to go in the period. With the defense holding, Swarthmore went into the half up by two goals.

- Putting the game out of reach, Kampel capitalized on a penalty kick given to Swarthmore, putting the Garnet up 3-0. While Widener would go on to score later in the period closing the gap to 3-1, Swarthmore's stifling defense held them goalless in the fourth, closing out the game for the Garnet.
