Force Joins Historic Legacy; Garners All-America Honors

ORLANDO, Fla. – Swarthmore College men's tennis star Charley Force garnered All-America accolades with his victory at the 2022 NCAA Individual Championships on Friday at the USTA National Campus.

With a two set, 7-5, 6-1 first round victory over fourth seeded Robert Liu from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, the sophomore received All-American status. Force, a All-Centennial Conference Second Team doubles member, fell in a hard fought battle to Vishnu Joshi from Johns Hopkins in the second round. He was one of 32 individual student-athletes to be selected to compete in the singles tournament. Force had a 16-6 record during the 2021-22 campaign, including a 9-4 record at the number one singles position. Against regionally ranked top ten opponents, Force was 1-2. In the last eight matches played, the sophomore was 5-3. He picked up a crucial point at the number one singles position in a semifinal victory over Haverford College on May 7th.

Force continues the historic legacy of Swarthmore men's tennis on the national stage as he becomes the 27th member in program history to earn All-America honors. He is the first men's tennis player for Garnet to earn All-America honors since Jon Reiss accomplished that feat in 2007. Reiss earned honors in 2007 as a singles player, with a two set victory over William Ellison from you guessed it, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

The honorific "All-American" title is given to student-athletes that are a top 8 seed in the NCAA singles tournament, win one round at the NCAA singles tournament, or finish in the Top 20 in the final Oracle ITA Rankings. The All-American status is awarded to doubles teams that are a top 4 seed in the NCAA doubles tournament, win one round at the NCAA doubles tournament, or finish in the Top 10 in the final Oracle ITA Rankings.
