Softball Sweeps Haverford in Historic Fashion; Clinches Top Seed

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -  Swarthmore College Softball earned the top seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament with a sweep over Haverford College on Tuesday. The Garnet defeated the rival Fords, 9-1 in game one and 8-0 in game two.

The sweep gave the Garnet a 24-4 overall record and 13-1 in Centennial play. The 2022 season is a record setting season for the program as it marks the most wins in Garnet history with 24. The record was of 23 victories was previously held by the 2006 and 2008 teams that appeared in the Centennial Conference Tournament. The sweep gave the Garnet 13 wins in conference play, which is the most wins in league action since the team won 11 games in 2007.

With the victory in game one, for the first time in school history, Swarthmore clinched home field advantage for the entire Centennial Conference tournament, which is slated to open on Tuesday, May 3rd. The pair of wins marked the first time in the Melissa Finley era that Swarthmore has knocked off Haverford.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Haverford took an early lead as a runner scored from third on an wild pitch in the top of the second. In the bottom half of the inning, Sam Hastings scored on a double down the left field line by Maya Estrera. The freshman, who started the game at third, would score on an RBI single to right field by Laura Hirai. The Garnet added two more runs in the bottom of the third as Hastings singled in Olivia McClammy and Kate Hart scored on a sacrifice fly by Emily Bertrand.

- Hastings added a pair of RBIs in the bottom of the fifth as Gwen Glatz and McClammy scored. The next at-bat, Bertrand ended the game with a three-run home run to deep left field, allowing Hastings and Kate Hart to score for a 9-1 victory.

-  In the circle, Glatz allowed one hit, one unearned run, walked one and struck out a batter as she earned her seventh victory of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The bats stayed hot from game one as the Garnet scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Estrera, Hirai and Alexandra Simon reached based without an out being recorded. McClammy knocked home Estrera and Hirai on a single up the middle. Hart followed suit with an RBI single to left field, allowing Simon to score. McClammy and Hart would score on the next at-bat as Hastings doubled to center field. 

- On a pinch hit opportunity in the bottom of the third, Brooke Coneeny tripled down the right field line to score Hastings and Cassidy Cheong

- Meg Ozawa was stellar in the circle as the lefty allowed one hit, struck out two and walked one in five innings of work. Ozawa didn't allow a hit until Carley Parsons laid down a bunt single in the top of the fourth inning.

UP NEXT
The Garnet (24-4, 13-1) will close out the regular season at Dickinson College on Saturday, and return home on Tuesday for the opening game of the Centennial Conference Tournament.
