Offense Leads Softball to Sweep Over Ursinus; Ozawa Records 100th Strikeout

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -  Swarthmore College Softball won its fifth straight Centennial Conference game as they swept Ursinus College on Thursday afternoon. The Garnet took game one with a score of 8-3, and game two in five innings, 8-0.

Alexandra Simon led the way with five hits and six runs batted in for the Garnet. Maya Estrera followed suit as the first year collected three hits, three runs batted in and score four times.

Gwen Glatz allowed three runs and four hits as she tossed seven strong innings in the opener. Meg Ozawa earned the victory in the second game as the lefty hurled five shutout innings and struckout four. The third strikeout of the game by Ozawa was her 100th career.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-  The Garnet jumped to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning behind RBI doubles from Simon and Olivia McClammy. Kate Hart added an RBI base hit in the opening inning for Swarthmore.

- Ursinus scored two in the bottom of the first, but Simon roped her fourth home run of the season to extend the Swarthmore lead to three in the top of the second inning. Estrera accounted for the remaining Garnet runs as the freshman hit home McClammy on a sacrifice fly to right field and a two-run home run in the top of the fifth.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- It took a little longer in the second game for the first run to cross the plate, as Swarthmore took a 1-0 lead after an RBI single up the middle by Simon to score Sam Hastings. A bases clearing double to left field by McClammy extended the lead by the visitors as Estrera, Cassidy Cheong and Simon crossed the plate. Hart hit home McClammy to give Swarthmore a 5-0 lead after three innings.

- In the away half of the fourth inning, Simon stepped to the plate with Estrera on second and Cehong on third. The sophomore shortstop rocketed her fifth home run of the season to left field. The second homer of the game ties Simon for the Centennial Conference lead with McClammy and Gillian Zack of Muhlenberg.
