Offense Leads the Way as Softball Wins a Pair; Knock Off #19 Marrons

CLERMONT, Fla. - Swarthmore College Softball earned a pair of wins on Tuesday afternoon at Legends Way Field as they knocked off Berea College and No. 19 Roanoke College. The Garnet knocked off the Mountaineers, 7-0, and the Maroons, 7-6. 

Swarthmore was led by a pair of hits from Kate Hart and Emily Bertrand in the morning game against Berea. In the night-cap, Maya Estrera was 3-of-5 from the plate, while Gwen Glatz, Olivia McClammy and Bertrand each added a pair of hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs. Alexandra Simon knocked in the first run as the short stop grounded out to third to score Glatz. Hart doubled to left center field allowing McClammy to give Swarthmore a 2-0 lead in the opening inning.

- Estrera added an a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth with a double to left center field. Cassidy Cheong and Sam Hastings scored on the play.

- In the top half of the seventh, McClammy knocked home Laura Hirai from third base. Bertrand recorded the third double of the game for Swarthmore as the freshman knocked in McClammy and Hart to extend the lead to 7-0.

- In the circle, Bertrand earned her first collegiate victory. The freshman allowed three hits, four walks and struck out eight in the complete game shutout. Bertrand and Hart finished the game with a team-high two hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Swarthmore took an early lead as McClammy roped an RBI single to right field allowing Glatz to score as the opening run in the bottom of the first. Bertrand continued her hot streak as the first-year knocked in Hart on an RBI ground out to second base in the bottom of the second inning. Glatz flew out to right field allowing Estrera to score from third base as Swarthmore took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

- In the top of the seventh inning, Roanoke rallied to to score six runs as they took a 6-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Bertrand roped a three-run RBI double to tie the game up at six. Hirari knocked in Flannery McFadden as the winning run on an error by the first baseman.

- Meg Ozawa entered the circle to earn the win as the lefty halted a fury from the Roanoke offense. Ozawa allowed three hits and struck out one, while Glatz allowed two hits, no walks and striking out four in the circle.

- Swarthmore handed the nationally ranked Maroons their first loss of the season as they fall to 11-1. It is only the second time in program history that the Garnet have knocked off a nationally ranked opponent. The last time Swarthmore knocked off a nationally ranked opponent was whe they beat #14 Ithaca College, 7-3, exactly two years ago on March 8th, 2020.

UP NEXT
The Garnet (3-2) return to diamond on Thursday for a pair of games. First pitch against Marietta College is set for 3:15 p.m., and the second game is slated to begin at 5:15 p.m. against Thomas College.
