Baseball Splits in Port Charlotte Opener, Defeats Misericordia in Game Two

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. - The Swarthmore College baseball team split their first day in Port Charlotte with a 14-2 loss against Heidelberg and a 9-8 victory over Misericordia on Saturday.

SWARTHMORE 2, HEIDELBERG 14
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Heidelberg struck first with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning, 1-0. The Garnet then began the second inning with an Emmet Reynolds single and a double from Michael Sepe to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. George Briggs plated the game-tying run with a sacrifice fly, while Josh Bein singled up the middle to bring home the go-ahead run, 2-1.

- Heidelberg exploded for eight runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull ahead by seven runs, 9-2. The big inning was blown open by a three-run home run as Heidelberg put their first five batters on base. 

- The Student Princes then added three more runs in the sixth inning to expand its lead to double digits, 12-2. They closed the game with one run in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
- After surrendering a run in the first inning, the Garnet tied things up with an unearned run in the bottom half. Swarthmore then added two runs in the second courtesy of an RBI single from Matthew Silvestre and double by Paul Cooke, 3-1.

- Later in the second inning, Luke Mutz brought home a run, while Austin Burgess blasted a three-run homer to blow the game open for the Garnet, 7-1.

- Misericordia fought back in the third inning with six runs to tie the game at seven. The Cougars then added another run in the fourth to pull ahead by one run, 8-7.

- Mutz provided the game-tying hit in the eighth inning before scoring on a balk to plate the game-winning run, 9-8.

The Garnet return to action tomorrow versus Lebanon Valley College.
