Late Heroics Lead Softball to Sweep Over Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - Swarthmore College Softball earned a sweep over Widener University in non-conference battle on Tuesday afternoon. The Garnet took game one with a score of 5-3, and earned a 4-0 shutout in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Gwen Glatz sat down the Pride in order as the Garnet and the Pride were scoreless through three-plus innings. Mailia Calciano knocked a run in on a single to give Widener a 1-0 advantage.

- In the top of the fifth inning with one out, Maya Estrera doubled. The freshman advanced to third on a ground out by Laura Hirai and scored on an RBI single by Olivia McClammy to tie the game at one. In the bottom of the sixth, the Pride took a 3-1 as Becca Tiley roped a two run double. 
 
- The offense broke through for the Garnet in the top of the seventh inning as Flannery McFadden led off the final frame, followed by a single by Hirai. McClammy loaded the bases with a single and one out.  McFadden scored on an RBI ground out to third base by Glatz. Alexandra Simon knocked in Hirari with an RBI single as the Garnet tied the game at three. Stepping to the plate with two outs and runners on first and second, Emily Bertrand knocked a two run RBI double to give the visiting team a 5-3 advantage.

- Glatz struckout two in the bottom of the seventh to earn the victory in the circle. The senior allowed four hits, three runs and struck out five in seven innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Simon got the Garnet on the board first with an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning. Simon came around to score as McClammy recorded her fourth homer of the season. 

- The Garnet added an insurance run in the sixth as Sam Hastings scored on a wild pitch.

- Bertrand, Hastings and Brooke Coneeny led the Garnet with two hits, while McClammy added a pair of RBIs. 

- Meg Ozawa allowed four hits, no runs and struck out out ten in the complete game shutout. The lefty recorded two or more strikeouts in four innings, including all three batters faced in the bottom of the fifth inning where the Pride went down swinging.
 

UP NEXT
The Garnet (9-2) return to the diamond on Sunday as they host Penn State Brandywine in a non-conference tilt. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
