Baseball Falls to Widener in Return North

CHESTER, PA - The Swarthmore College baseball team fell to Widener University, 13-8, as the Garnet returned north from spring break on Friday. 

Matthew Silvestre and Paul Cooke each led the offense with three hits, while Luke Mutz had a pair of RBI. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pride jumped out to an early lead with a crooked number in the second inning. Widener strung together eight runs in the frame on seven hits and one error to take a commanding lead, 8-0.

- Swarthmore chipped away with two runs in the third inning. Cooke doubled to open the inning and then executed a double steal with Nate Jbara before taking home on a throwing error. Jbara later came home to score on a Mutz sacrifice flyout, 8-2.

- Widener added a run in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Garnet countered with a pair in the bottom of the fifth. Silvestre and Cooke singled to open the frame. Kirk Terada-Herzer then singled in the first runner, while Mutz plated Cooke on a fielder's choice, 10-4. 

- The Garnet trimmed its deficit with two more runs in the sixth inning. Silvestre started a two-out rally with a single and then advanced to third on a Cooke double. Swarthmore then scored a pair on a Widener error, 10-6.

- Widener answered with two runs in the sixth inning. Swarthmore then added a run in the seventh on a throwing error and another in the ninth on an Burgess home run, 13-8.

- Cooke: 3-for-5, 3 R
- Burgess: 1-for-4, HR

UP NEXT
The Garnet (5-9) return to action at Immaculata on Friday.
