SWARTHMORE, Pa. - It had been 714 days since Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse last took the field at Clothier Field Stadium, but they returned to action on Saturday in style. The Garnet knocked off local rival, Widener University, 14-12, to open the 2022 campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet took advantage of an early penalty by the Pride as
Von Mabbs opened the 2022 season with a man-up goal. After earning a face-off victory,
Joel Paulson took the ball down the field and scored the second goal for the Garnet. Swarthmore opened up to a 3-0 lead as
Jackson Brosgol netted his first goal of the season.
- Swarthmore outscored Widener 4-2 in the second quarter, as Mabbs tallied a pair of goals.
Danny Lowe opened the second quarter with hist first collegiate goal. With under a minute to play in the second,
Ben Schaeffer notched his first goal of the season as Swarthmore took an 8-5 advantage. A few seconds later, Mabbs gave Swarthmore a 9-5 edge into the half-time break.
- In the third quarter, the offense took a little bit of a step back as the goalie stole the show.
Jack Ballou stopped five shots in the third as the teams combined for four goals.
- Under the six minute mark, Bryant Maits got the Pride within a goal of the Garnet at 12-11.
Carter Strauch and Mabbs added back-to-back goals with under three minutes remaining in the contest to give Swarthmore a 14-11 lead.
