Women’s Basketball Comeback Falls Short at Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team's comeback fell short as they suffered their first conference loss at Muhlenberg College, 60-57, on Thursday night.

The Garnet outscored Muhlenberg 18-10 in a pivotal third quarter to shift the momentum in a game which was previously controlled by the Mules. However, Muhlenberg narrowly outscored the Garnet in the fourth quarter to hold off Swarthmore.

Alyssa Hayashi and Norah Wingfield led the way with 16 points, respectively. Carolina Lopez also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points for the Garnet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Anna Hansson opened the game with a jumper on the first possession, while Wingfield added a layup on the team's following trip down the court. Muhlenberg kept pace with the Garnet early before gaining separation with a three-pointer, which sparked a 10-2 run for the Mules. Kim Kockenmeister ended the opening stanza with a jumper as Swarthmore pulled within six points after one quarter, 20-14.

- Lopez put the Garnet within a bucket with a jumper at the 7:24 mark. However, the Mules strung together another run as they led by as many as 12 points in the quarter. Hayashi trimmed the team's deficit to single digits before the half with a layup to close out the scoring, 33-24.

- Hayashi sparked a massive third quarter run with three-pointers on consecutive possessions to put the Garnet within four points at the 7:35 mark. Moments later, Wingfield added the team's eighth-unanswered point with a layup off a Muhlenberg turnover. T Sallie then put the Garnet ahead with a three-pointer from the wing, while Wingfield expanded their lead to four points with another deep ball, 40-36.

- Swarthmore tallied 14-unanswered points before Muhlenberg ended a nearly six-minute drought with a bucket at the 2:57 mark. Muhlenberg salvaged the quarter with a 7-0 run to regain the lead, but Raven Richardson went coast-to-coast for a layup to end the quarter with a one-point deficit, 43-42.

- Muhlenberg opened the fourth quarter with a pair of threes, which was countered by layups from Lopez and Hayashi. The Garnet pulled within one point after a jumper from Wingfield at the 6:51 mark. However, Muhlenberg answered with another three-pointer to expand their lead to four points, 54-50.

- Hayashi ended a three-minute drought for the Garnet with a layup, before Lopez added a steal and a bucket to pull within one point with 1:41 left. After a pair of Muhlenberg free throws, Lopez added another layup to trim their deficit to one point. Swarthmore earned a crucial stop at the defensive end, but were unable to take the lead on their final possession.
