SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Keeping their undefeated Centennial streak going, the Swarthmore women's basketball team took down Haverford College 49-38 on Tuesday, Nov. 29th.
Sophomore
Norah Wingfield led the way offensively for the Garnet with 12 points, while Senior
Kim Kockenmeister locked down the defensive side of the ball with three steals and a personal best eleven rebounds. Overall, the Garnet defense had their best performance of the year, holding the Fords to a season low of 38 points, beating out their previous mark of 39 set against Ursinus College just two weeks prior.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both squads struggled early on the offensive end, with Swarthmore unable to record a field goal until a Wingfield layup put them up 5-4 with 5:05 left in the first quarter. Both teams would proceed to trade baskets, with the lead changing four more times before the Garnet went into the break up 12-10.
- The second period saw the Garnet able to generate some breathing room early, taking a six point lead at 16-10 thanks to layups from sophomore
Carolina Lopez and first year
Anna Hansson. While Haverford were able to retake a three point lead halfway through the quarter, the Garnet offense exploded thanks to points from Wingfield, Kockenmeister and first years
Harrison Anderson and
Raven Richardson, securing Swarthmore a 29-22 margin at the half.
- Swarthmore struggled offensively in the third quarter, not recording their first field goal until a triple from
T Sallie rattled in with just 2:21 left to play. In the meantime, while still effectively stifled by the Garnet's smothering defense, the Fords were able to creep back up, eventually narrowing Swarthmore's advantage to just one at 30-29. Free throws from sophomore
Alyssa Hayashi and a jumper from junior
Emily Smith to close out the period would see the Garnet regain some daylight however, with the Garnet going into the final quarter sporting a 37-32 lead.
- Looking to ice the game early, Wingfield kicked off the scoring in the fourth with a dagger of a three to put the Garnet up 40-32. While the Fords fought back, coming within four points with 7:15 left in the game, Swarthmore's offensive firepower proved too much as a 9-2 run to close out the game gave the Garnet a dominant 49-38 win.
- The Garnet are now 4-2, 2-0 in conference play.
