Women's Basketball Wins Third-Straight with Road Win at Washington & Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team collected its third-straight victory as they returned from Thanksgiving break with a road win over Washington & Lee University, 57-54, on Sunday afternoon.

The post players led the way for the Garnet as Norah Wingfield, Raven Richardson and Anna Hansson all scored in double figures. Wingfield led the way with 15 points, while the first-year duo of Richardson and Hansson scored 13 and 10, respectively.

Both teams struggled from beyond the arc with only two combined three-pointers on the afternoon. The Garnet won the turnover battle 18-26 and scored 20 points off turnovers to tip the scale in a tightly-contested game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- T Sallie opened the game with the first five points for the Garnet. After opening the game with a jumper, he fought through contact with a fastbreak, and-one layup to add three more points for Swarthmore. Wingfield then added a jumper and Richardson contributed five-straight points to give the Garnet a 12-0 advantage. The Generals were held scoreless until the 4:15 mark of the opening quarter as Swartmore would go on to dominate the opening stanza, 16-4.

- The Generals responded with nine-unanswered points to start the second quarter. Alyssa Hayashi and Carolina Lopez both split free throws at the line to put the Garnet on the board in the second, before the Generals tied the game at the 3:39 mark. After a Lopez jumper regained the lead, the Generals took its first advantage of the game with their lone three-pointer of the afternoon. Washington & Lee outscored Swarthmore 22-6 as they carried a four-point lead into halftime, 26-22.

- Wingfield opened the second half with a three-pointer to give the Garnet some momentum heading into the final half. After a Generals bucket expanded their lead to three points, Swarthmore responded with seven-straight points to regain the lead. Kim Kockenmeister started the rally with a layup following an offensive rebound, while Hayashi, Wingfield and Richardson each added a bucket to cap off the run. The Garnet led by as many as eight points in the third quarter, but ended the stanza with a four-point advantage, 40-36.

- The Generals trimmed their deficit to one point at the 8:03 mark. In need of a big bucket, Richardson added a jumper on the following possession to build a three-point advantage. She then sunk a pair of free throws to pull ahead by five points, 47-42.

- Washington & Lee added six-straight points to reclaim the lead with 4:26 left. On the Garnet's following possession, Hansson grabbed an offensive rebound and knocked down a pair of free throws to retake the lead. Moments later, the first-year then added a jumper to go ahead by three points, 51-48, with 3:24 left.

- The Generals refused to go away as they took another one-point lead with 1:20 left. Hayashi knocked down a clutch jumper to regain the lead. She then added a pair of free throws in the final seconds to seal the victory for Swarthmore, 57-54.
