Men’s Basketball Falls Short in Nailbiter at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team suffered a last-second defeat in a nailbiter at Widener University, 67-66, on Wednesday.

Vinny DeAngelo led the way for the Garnet with 19 points, three rebounds and three assists. The senior scored 14 of his points in the second half as he led the comeback for Swarthmore.

Aidan Godfrey carried the Garnet early with 14 first half points as he ended the game with a season-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. George Visconti also joined Godfrey in double figures with 10 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Following a Michael Caprise hook shot, Matt Mulvey put the Garnet ahead early with a three-pointer from the wing. The Pride answered with eight-straight points before Godfrey drained a triple from the top of the key and then added a jumper to pull within one point at the halfway mark of the opening half, 13-12.

- After Widener took their largest lead of the opening half, Godfrey responded with another three-pointer to give the Garnet momentum. DeAngelo then drained another deep ball, which was followed by a pair of free throws from Godfrey, who led Swarthmore with 14-points at the half. The Pride responded with a bucket before intermission to pull ahead by eight points, 35-27.

- George Visconti connected from deep to spark 10-unanswered points for the Garnet. George Corzine then followed with a pair of free throws, while Eddie Paquette added a three from the top of the key to tie the game. Corzine then added a layup on the following possession to give Swarthmore the lead, 44-42.

- Godfrey and Corzine added a pair of consecutive free throws to give Swarthmore an eight-point advantage with 8:21 left. However, the Pride battled back and pulled within one-point with 2:11 remaining. 

- Swarthmore's defense came away with a huge defensive stop before adding a driving layup from DeAngelo to take a four-point lead. The Pride then answered with a three-pointer at the other end to pull back within one point, 64-63, with 1:13 to play in regulation.  

- Visconti put the Garnet ahead late with a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining. However, the Pride won the game on their final possession with a jumper in the paint, 67-66.
