CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Holding on through a hard-fought comeback attempt, the Swarthmore men's basketball team outlasted DeSales University 63-60 on Saturday, Nov. 19th.
On the offensive end, Swarthmore saw senior
George Visconti lead the way with 15 points, while senior
George Corzine (14), junior
Vinny DeAngelo (13) and junior
Michael Caprise (12) all came through with double digit points for the Garnet. Caprise also played a significant role defensively, snagging eight rebounds and tallying a block.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- While DeSales took an early lead off of a three-pointer and a free throw, a jumper from Caprise tied the game at four all four minutes into the game. A 10-2 run over the next five minutes of play would give the Garnet a 14-6 lead. However, the Garnet could not rest on their laurels, as DeSales stormed back to pull the contest within one at 14-13 with eight minutes left in the half. Jumpers from Visconti and Corzine recaptured a comfortable lead that the Garnet carried into the half, with Swarthmore up 29-22 as the horn sounded.
- Looking to expand their lead early in the second half, a bucket from Visconti and a triple from DeAngelo gave the Garnet their first double digit margin of the night at 34-24. DeSales would fight back however, closing the gap to one at 36-35 with just under 14 minutes left to play. Fending off an aggressive DeSales attack, Swarthmore would not be able to find the same level of separation that they had previously enjoyed over the next few minutes, with DeSales even capturing their first lead since the very beginning of the game at 41-40.
- Eager to seize their lead back a layup from senior
Colin Shaw would ignite a rally for the Garnet, with Swarthmore going on a 17-8 run to take a comfortable eight point lead at 57-49 with five and a half minutes left to go. While DeSales pulled the game back within one with just eleven seconds left to play, Swarthmore's lead proved insurmountable as DeSales' comeback would fall short, as the Garnet came away with a 63-60 win.
- The Garnet are now 4-1 on the season.
