Women’s Basketball Picks Up First Win In Home Opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Playing at Tarble Pavilion for the first time this season, the Swarthmore women's basketball team defeated Widener University by a score of 56-46 on Tuesday, Nov. 15th.

Offensively, senior Kim Kockenmeister led the way for the Garnet, posting a season high 17 points, while first year Anna Hansson (13) and sophomore T Sallie (10) put up double digit points on the night. Sallie also played a pivotal role in Swarthmore's stellar defense, notching seven steals and eight rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- While Widener jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, Sallie responded for the Garnet, knocking down his first triple of the night to even the game at 3-all. Both squads would proceed to trade baskets, neither truly able to pull away. While each side would see some success on the offensive end, it never proved enough to shake the other team, with four lead changes occuring in the 1st quarter alone. Thanks to a last second layup from senior Colleen Anderson, the Garnet would go into the break up 15-13.
- Sallie would bury a three in the opening seconds of the second quarter, extending the Garnet's lead to 18-13. While Widener would respond by tying the game up at 20-all, Swarthmore was finally able to create some distance from the Pride. On the back of a six-point period from Kockenmesiter, the Garnet were able to go into halftime sporting a comfortable 30-23 advantage.
- The start of the third would see Swarthmore stall out offensively, with Widener taking full advantage and narrowing the Garnet's lead to 30-28 three minutes into the period. A Kockenmeister layup finally snapped the over six minute Swarthmore scoring drought, getting the Garnet offense humming again. Off of baskets from Hansson and sophomore Katelyn Becker, Swarthmore was able to recapture their lead, going into the fourth up 38-32.
- The Garnet dominated the beginning of the fourth quarter, completely shutting down the Widener offense and extending their advantage to 48-32 with 6:38 left to play. While Widener attempted a late comeback, closing the gap to as little as 53-45, Swarthmore's lead proved insurmountable as the Garnet took home the win 56-46 over the Pride.
