Women’s Basketball Falls In Close Contest With Nazareth College

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY. - Wrapping up the Hotchberg Tip-Off Classic up at Hamilton College, the Swarthmore women's basketball team lost to Nazareth College by a score of 60-58.

Offensively, the Garnet saw double digit points put up by two players, with sophomore Alyssa Hayashi and first-year Raven Richardson tallying 17 and 11 points respectively. Dominating on both ends of the ball, Hayashi and Richardson also put up impressive defensive stats, with Hayashi notching four steals and four rebounds while Richardson posted 11 rebounds and 3 steals.

For her play over the weekend, Hayashi was one of two players named to the All-Tournament team.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Starting off the game strong, the Garnet struck first, taking a 2-0 lead off of a jumper from sophomore Norah Wingfiled just 20 seconds into the game. Another bucket from Wingfield would take back the lead for Swarthmore after two Nazareth free throws tied it up at 2-all, as the Garnet would continue to keep the contest close. Despite trailing by seven with four minutes left in the quarter, buckets from Richardson, Hayashi, and sophomore Carolina Lopez would shrink the Golden Eagles' lead to just one at 13-12. Four foul shots from Richardson in the final 80 seconds would secure a 16-15 Swarthmore lead going into the break.
- With neither team able to score through the first three minutes of the second quarter, Richardson finally broke the drought, nailing a jumper to extend the Garnet advantage to 18-15. However, Nazareth would match Swarthmore's offensive pace, managing to tie the game at 25-25 with three minutes left to play, and then take a 33-27 lead going into the half.
- Nazareth would extend their lead to start off the second half, going up by as many as 16 points over the Garnet. Buckets from Wingfield, Hayashi and first year Anna Hansson would marginally shrink the Garnet deficit, with Nazareth ending the quarter up 51-38.
- While neither squad was able to find paydirt through the first two minutes of play, a triple from sophomore T Sallie got the Garnet offense humming. Going on a 14-6 run, Swarthmore seemed poised for a fourth quarter comeback, trailing Nazareth by just two points at 57-55 with 1:50 left to play. Rounding out the run the same way he started it, Sallie knocked down another three to give the Garnet the lead with just over 30 seconds left to play, their first since five minutes into the second quarter. However, three free throws gave Nazareth back the lead in the closing seconds, with the Golden Eagles ultimately taking down the Garnet 60-58.
- The Garnet are now 0-2 on the season.
