Volleyball Closes Out Weekend 0-3, Falls To #9 Wisconsin-Whitewater 1-3

NEW YORK, NY - Wrapping up the NYU Invitational, the Swarthmore volleyball team lost 1-3 to #9 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday, Oct. 8th.

The Garnet were led on offense by juniors Kaylee Zhang and Dani Pena, who put up 10 kills and 22 assists respectively. On the defensive end, first year Ellie Streeper held down the fort for the Garnet with 17 digs, while sophomore Hannah Humphreys stifled many Warhawk attacks with six blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-    Both squads proved evenly matched to start off the first set, with the lead changing four times before the scoreboard read six-all. However, the Garnet offense could not keep up with the Warhawk attack as the period went on, as Wisconsin-Whitewater more than doubled up Swarthmore, going on a 19-8 run to close out the first set 25-14.
-    Not going out without a fight, the Garnet struck back in the second set, taking advantage of two aces from Zhang to go up 3-0. While Wisconsin-Whitewater was able to even the score at six-all, Swarthmore rode a 12-3 run to jump out to an 18-9 lead. While the Warhawks were able to close the gap slightly to 21-14, the Garnet's lead proved insurmountable as Swarthmore wrapped up the set 25-14, tying the match 1-1.
-    The Garnet were not able to translate the momentum of the second set win into more success, dropping the third and fourth sets. In the third set, while both squads saw stretches of offensive success, the Garnet was never able to wrestle the lead from Wisconsin-Whitewater, with the Warhawks going on an 8-3 run to close out the set 25-20. In the fourth set, while the Garnet jumped out to an early 11-8 lead, they were unable to maintain it, with three different 3-0 runs resulting in the Warhawks taking the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
-    Swarthmore is now 10-7 on the season, 3-1 in conference play.
