Pena Records 1000th Assist, Garnet Earns Third-Straight Centennial Win

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Swarthmore College women's volleyball team earned their third-straight conference victory as they bested Washington College, 3-0, on Tuesday night. The Garnet fell behind early in the opening set, but mounted a late comeback as they dominated the Shorewomen the rest of the way.

Dani Pena recorded her 1,000th career assist to surpass a major career milestone. The junior paced the Garnet offense with 36 assists on the day as she currently sits at 1,032 for her career.

Trisha Razdan and Jordan Perry tallied double-digit kills for the Garnet with 14 and 10, respectively. Razdan also collected a team-high three service aces. Ellie Streeper put forth another solid defensive performance with 17 digs. Hannah Humphreys also had a big game defensively with four blocks. 



HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Shorewomen jumped out on top with a commanding 6-0 lead in the opening set. Washington College led for the majority of the set as they maintained their six-point advantage midway through the stanza, 17-11. Kaylee Zhang helped right the ship with a much-needed kill, which sparked four-straight points following a Garnet timeout. The Garnet pulled within one point with an Angelina Heminway service ace, before tying the set on another Heminway ace, 23-23. After the Shorewomen regained the lead, Pena knotted the game with a kill, while Razdan took the team's first lead with a kill. Swarthmore went on to clinch the set on a Perry kill, 27-25.

- Swarthmore carried momentum into the second set as they jumped out to an early 5-1 advantage. Washington College kept the set close before the Garnet rallied for a 6-1 run to gain separation on the Shorewomen, 20-12. Razdan and Perry got the rally started with back-to-back kills, before Razdan also added a service ace after a Shorewomen timeout. Swarthmore ended the set with six-unanswered points, which was capped off by consecutive Heminway kills, 25-14.

- The Garnet put together five-straight points early in set three to take another early lead, 9-4. Swarthmore then put the Shorewomen away with an 8-2 run, which featured six-unanswered points to pull ahead by 10 points. Washington College mounted a comeback as they pulled within two points, but the Garnet clinched the game on a Zhang kill, 25-21.
