Field Hockey Cruises Past McDaniel, 3-1

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Improving to 3-1 in conference play, the Swarthmore field hockey team took down McDaniel College 3-1 on Saturday, Oct. 8th.

Recovering nicely from a first quarter that ended with McDaniel leading 1-0, the Garnet dominated the rest of the match. Swarthmore saw three goals on the day, two from senior Martina Kampel and one from senior Quinn Basewitz.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-    McDaniel struck first, sneaking the ball past first year keeper Cassandra Conklin in the seventh minute to go up 1-0. This would be the Terror's only goal of the match.
-    The Garnet hit back in the 21st minute, with Kampel taking full advantage of a penalty stroke to slam the ball past the McDaniel keeper and tie the match at one-all.
-    While the scoreboard read 1-1 at half, the Garnet would take their first lead just nine minutes into the second half. Taking full advantage of a snuck-in pass from junior Deborah Kim, Basewitz sent the ball screaming past the keeper into the back of the net to put the Swarthmore up 2-1.
-    Looking to cement their victory, the Garnet would go up 3-1 when in the 52nd minute Kim drew out the keeper just to send a bouncing pass over to Kampel for her second goal of the contest.
-    After surrendering McDaniel's one and only goal, the Swarthmore defense effectively nullified any offensive attack McDaniel tried to mount. The Terror were held to just eight shots on the match, only three of which were on goal. Conklin was left unchallenged in the second half, with McDaniel unable to put a shot on the goal in the latter two periods.
-    On top of their three goals, the Garnet's offensive attack was firing on all cylinders, netting Swarthmore 21 shots and drawing 17 penalty corners to McDaniel's 4.
-    The Garnet improve to 8-3, 3-1 in Centennial Conference play.
