CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Despite scoring two late goals, the Swarthmore field hockey team could not complete the comeback, losing to Washington College 3-2 on Wednesday, Oct. 12th.
Trailing three goals to none in the fourth quarter, Swarthmore fought back, scoring twice off the sticks of junior
Brooke Findlay and junior
Jackie Crowley to close the gap to 3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams dominated defensively in the first half, with each squad being held to just three shots. The break horn sounded with the score deadlocked at 0-0.
- The Shorewomen scored twice to kick off the second half, once in the 32nd minute and again in the 42nd minute. Washington would then extend their lead in the 50th minute, going up 3-0 with just ten minutes left to play.
- Not going out without a fight however, the Garnet rallied back, scoring in both the 54th and the 58th minutes. The first goal came when Findlay took full advantage of a pass from sophomore
Sophia Hitchingham, flipping a reverse shot past the keeper to put the Garnet on the board. The second goal was put in by Crowley after expertly handling a pass from Hitchingham and slamming the ball into the back of the cage to put the score at 3-2. The Garnet would not be able to find paydirt again however, ultimately falling to the Shorewomen 3-2.
- Swarthmore was not without their chances to secure another goal, tallying 8 shots on the game, while also being awarded five penalty corners.
- While the Garnet allowed three goals, they otherwise kept the Washington offense in check, allowing the Shorewomen just ten shots and one penalty corner.
- The Garnet are now 8-4 overall, 3-2 in conference play.
