Volleyball Falls to Pair of Nationally-Ranked Opponents

NEW YORK CITY - The Swarthmore College women's volleyball fell to two nationally-ranked opponents on the opening night of the NYU Invitational on Friday. The Garnet fell to #8 Calvin University, 3-0, before dropping a competitive battle versus  #10 NYU, 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- After Calvin pulled ahead by five points early in the opening set, Sarah Carrasco and Zindzhi Montgomery responded with back-to-back kills as the Garnet went on a 3-0 run to pull within two points. Later in the set, Swarthmore tied the game at 13-13 after four-unanswered points, which featured kills from Kaylee Zhang, Trisha Razdan and Jordan Perry. Both teams went back-and-forth in a narrow opening set until Calvin put together consecutive points for a 25-22 win.

- The Garnet opened the second set with three-straight points as they jumped out to a 10-8 lead and prompted the Knights to use their first timeout. However, the Knights rallied late with five-consecutive points late in the set to pull ahead by six. Calvin went on to take the second set 25-19.

- Swarthmore fell behind in an early 7-3 hole to open the third set. The Garnet then responded with six-straight kills to take an early lead. Ellie Streeper helped lead the charge with two service aces during the team's 6-0 stretch. However, Calvin responded with a 6-0 rally of their own to regain separation on the Garnet. Swarthmore battled back late to take the lead two different times, but ended up falling 27-25 in a tightly-contested third set.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- NYU jumped out to an early 6-2 advantage, which prompted the Garnet to take a timeout. The Garnet climbed back into the set with a 6-2 run at the midway point as they pulled within two points. However, the Garnet were unable to take the lead as they fell 25-21 in the opening set. 

- The Garnet got off to a fast start with an 8-4 run to open the second set. Chloe Mayhue ended the run with a kill, which forced the Violets to call an early timeout. Swarthmore maintained pressure midway through the set with a 7-1 rally to give themselves an eight-point advantage, 16-8. NYU then climbed back into the game with an 8-0 run to take a one-point advantage. However, the Garnet responded once again as they clinched the set on three-straight points, 27-25.

- The Violets started fast in a pivotal third set as they scored the first four points. Swarthmore gained the lead with six-unanswered points at the midway point of the set. NYU then countered with four-straight points late in the set as they captured the lead and never surrendered it, 25-21.

- Both teams went back and forth in a tightly-contested opening to the fourth set. The Garnet took its first lead of the set with a Zhang kill to take a 10-9 lead. NYU began to pull ahead late with a 5-1 run to pull within one-point of clinching the match. The Garnet then added consecutive points on a service error and a Zhang kill to cut its deficit the three before the Violets took the set following a timeout, 25-21.
