Volleyball Raises Over $5,000 for Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team partnered with VS Cancer to raise $5,430 to help in the fight against pediatric brain cancer. The Garnet culminated their fundraising campaign last night as they hosted their VS Cancer event before the start of their match versus Bryn Mawr College.

Led by senior Sarah Carrasco and freshman Jalyn Miller, the volleyball team worked with VS CANCER, the signature fundraising campaign of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, with proceeds that help fund child life programs in local hospitals and lifesaving pediatric brain tumor research. Every year, nearly 6,000 children are diagnosed with a brain tumor, and while the survival rate is just below 75%, brain tumors are still the number one deadliest cancer for pediatric patients.

Partnering with athletic teams across the nation, VS Cancer has gone on to fund major breakthroughs in cancer treatment, including new vaccination strategies for vulnerable children, more precise tumor mapping, and the best way to integrate necessary access to education during long hospital stays.

"The work we are celebrating here tonight plays an important role in defending children everywhere, even ensuring that we will have a pediatric brain cancer survivor attend one of our upcoming practices," sophomore Hannah Humphries said to the crowd before last night's match.

With the help from so many of our Swarthmore volleyball families, alumni, friends and campus community, the team surpassed its goal of raising $4,000. If you would like to contribute to the Garnet's fight against pediatric brain cancer, donations are still being accepted online.
