Volleyball Comes Back at Dickinson, Sweeps Susquehanna in Tri-Match

CARLISLE, Pa. - The regionally-ranked Swarthmore College volleyball team swept its weekend tri-match versus Dickinson College and Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon.

The Garnet opened the day with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Centennial rival Dickinson College. Swarthmore fell behind late in the third set, but sparked an incredible six-point comeback as they stole a pivotal third set victory and went on to win the match. The Garnet then wrapped up its afternoon with a 3-0 sweep over Susquehanna. 

Kaylee Zhang and Dani Pena put together outstanding afternoons for the Garnet. Zhang opened the tri-match with a career-best 24 kills and 22 digs, while Pena collected a career-high 47 assists in a conference win over Dickinson.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Ellie Streeper added an ace to give the Garnet an early 5-1 lead in the opening set. The Devils stormed back with a 6-1 run to take their first lead of the set, 12-11. Swarthmore regained the lead later in the set with a kill from Zhang and a Dickinson attack error, 15-14. However, The Devils held a lead the rest of the way as they narrowly held off the Garnet, 25-23.

- Both teams were evenly matched early in the second set until Swarthmore gained separation with four-unanswered points, 11-8. Zhang added a pair of kills to fuel the Garnet's 4-0 run. Dickinson regained the lead later in the set as both squads traded one-point advantages. The Garnet regained control once more with three-consecutive kills from Zhang to pull ahead by two points, 21-19. Dickinson stalled momentum with a point of their own, but Zhang answered with back-to-back kills as the Garnet held onto the second set, 25-21. Zhang collected seven kills during the second set. 

- The Devils jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the third set. The Garnet would get back on track with a 7-2 run, which featured a pair of kills from both Zhang and Chloe Mayhue, to tie the game at 10-10. Dickinson would take control late in the set with four-unanswered points to take a six-point advantage. The Devils would then pull within set point with a 24-18 advantage. With their backs against the wall, Pena sparked a late comeback with a kill as the Garnet rallied for three-straight points. Following a Dickinson timeout, Swarthmore rattled off three more points to tie the game at 24-24. The Garnet eventually capped off a massive comeback as they went on to take the third set, 32-30. 

- Swarthmore rallied for four-straight points to take a 10-6 lead in the fourth set. The Garnet began to run away with the set as they built their lead to eight, 16-8. Mayhue helped close out the match with back-to-back kills, while Streeper added an ace and Angelina Heminway clinched with a kill to cap off six-unanswered points, 25-12.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet forced Dickinson to take the game's first timeout after jumping out to a 14-10 lead in the opening set. Zhang started a 5-0 run with a kill and a block, before Pena capped off the rally with back-to-back aces and a kill. Susquehanna mounted a comeback to tie the score at 18-18, but the Garnet answered with six-straight points as they went on to take the set 25-19.

- Swarthmore jumped out to a 6-2 advantage to open the second set, but the River Hawks would respond to take an 8-7 lead. Following a Garnet timeout, Heminway tied the game with a much-needed kill as the Garnet quickly regained the lead off a kill from Zhang. Later in the set, Mayhue tallied a kill to give the Garnet a 16-11 lead as the River Hawks countered with their first timeout. The Garnet led comfortably for the rest of the way as they went on to claim the set on a Trisha Razdan kill, 25-19. 

- Both teams were evenly matched in a back-and-forth opening to the third set. The Garnet took a three-point advantage at the midway point following a kill from Zhang, 11-8. Swarthmore expanded its lead to five with a kill from Razdan and a Dickinson attack error, which prompted the River Hawks to call a timeout, 14-9. Susquehanna was able to pull within four points, but the Garnet used a timeout to spark a 5-0 rally to take the set.  Zhang, who had an incredible afternoon for the Garnet, clinched the set with a kill, 25-16.
