Two Men Earn Singles Championships, Melnikov Finishes as Singles Championship Runner-Up at ITA Regionals

| Box Score 3 FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Swarthmore College men's tennis team impressed at the ITA Regionals with a pair of singles titles and a championship singles runner-up finish.

Michael Melnikov put together an incredible run as he advanced to the championship singles finale without dropping a single set. The freshman bested opponents from Bridgewater College, University of Mary Washington and a pair of Johns Hopkins opponents before falling to Hopkins in the championship round. With today's performance, Melnikov also punched his ticket to the ITA Cup in Rome in two weeks.

Lalith Suresh and Andres Fente both claimed singles titles for the Garnet. Suresh outlasted opponents in B1 singles, while Fente took the B2 singles draw.



FRIDAY, SEPT. 30
SINGLES

- Melnikov won both of his opening day matchups in championship singles. The freshman was victorious over Bridgewater College (6-2, 6-0) to open play. Melnikov then finished the day with a victory over the University of Mary Washington (6-4, 6-1) to advance to the round of 16. 

- Max Lindstorm was victorious in his opening round matchup against Averett University (6-0, 6-1) in championship singles. He then suffered a narrow defeat against the University of Mary Washington in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 9-11).

- Josiah Myers-Lipton was victorious in his opening round matchup against Christopher Newport (6-2, 7-5) in championship singles. However, Myers-Lipton fell later in the day in a three-set showdown versus Johns Hopkins University (7-6, 6-2, 7-10).

- Phil Rehwinkel dropped a tightly-contested battle versus Haverford College in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 10-4) in the opening round of championship singles. Rashil Patel also lost his opening round effort versus Haverford (5-7, 6-4, 2-10).

- Suresh and Hellman Zhao both won their opening round matchups in B1 singles. Suresh defeated Hampden-Sydney College 8-6, while Zhao won 8-3 over Washington & Lee University.

- Fente topped Christopher Newport 8-4 in the opening round of B2 singles. 

DOUBLES
- Zhao and Rehwinkel won their opening round match 8-4 versus Hampden-Sydney College in championship doubles. The pairing then fell to the University of Mary Washington, 5-8, in the second round.

- Utham Koduri and Fente defeated Ursinus, 8-4, in the opening round, before dropping a tight battle against Carnegie Mellon University, 7-8, in the second round. 

- Melnikov and Patel fell to Stevens, 4-8, in the second round after earning an opening round bye. Max Pogorelov and Lindstrom also fell in the second round to Salisbury College, 4-8, after a bye.

SATURDAY, OCT. 1
SINGLES

- Melnikov continued to move through the field as he won his quaterfinals matchup versus Johns Hopkins University (6-0, 6-2) to advance to the semifinals. 

- Suresh and Zhao were both victorious in the quarterfinals of B1 singles. Suresh defeated Johns Hopkins 8-3, while Zhao won 8-7 over another Johns Hopkins opponent. 

- Suresh earned a spot in the semifinals with an 8-4 victory over Washington & Lee University. The freshman then defeated Haverford College 8-4 to take the B1 singles title. 

- Fente defeated Averett University 8-4 in the quarterfinals, before earning an 8-0 win over Stevens in the semifinals. The freshman then advanced to the finals, where he defeated Christopher Newport 8-3 to earn the B2 singles title.

SUNDAY, OCT. 2
SINGLES

- Melnikov defeated his second-straight Johns Hopkins competitor with a two-set victory in the semifinals (6-2, 7-5) to advance to the final round of championship singles.

- Melnikov faced off against Johns Hopkins' Thomas Yu in the championship singles finale. The freshman dropped the first set 4-6, but responded with a comeback victory in the second set. Melnikov fell behind early in the second set, but stormed back with a 6-3 set win. After falling behind 2-6 in the final set, Melnikov battled back once again to tie the set at 7-7. However, the freshman's incredible run came to an end with an 8-10 loss in the final set.
