Field Hockey Bests Ursinus in Historic Win, Hitchingham Scores Twice

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team earned a crucial 3-2 victory at Ursinus College on Wednesday night. The Garnet defeated the Bears for the first time since the 1948 season.

Sophia Hitchingham led the charge with a pair of goals, while Amelia Landry added an important insurance tally to seal the victory late in the game. Hitchingham collected her third goal of the season, while Landry added her first collegiate score.

Cassandra Conklin made a game-high seven saves for the Garnet in a full 60-minutes of action. The Garnet were outshot by the Bears, 18-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet struck early in the opening quarter with a goal in the 8th minute. Hitchingham controlled a loose rebound in front of the cage and snuck it past the keeper for the opening tally. The Bears had the opportunity to even the score on a penalty stroke to end the quarter, but the attempt was saved by Conklin. The first-year goalie made five saves in a busy opening stanza for the Garnet defense.

- Callie Cho tallied the lone shot on goal of the second quarter in the 28th minute. Cho fired a shot high from the center of the box, but had the attempt denied by the Bears goalie.

- Hitchingham added another goal in the 38th minute. Jackie Crowley played the ball to Hitchingham from the side of the cage. The sophomore then buried the shot from the front of the cage to add an insurance goal.

- Ursinus cut its deficit in half with a penalty stroke in the 47th minute. However, the Garnet answered with a goal from Landry in the 49th minute. Quinn Basewitz took the feed following a corner stroke and played a shot towards the cage, which was deflected high off the stick of Landry.
